We might imagine that we’re covering vast distances as we continue living, seeking, and growing.
Might it be possible that instead of a path from point A to point B, living is more like walking up a spiral staircase? As we go around each time, we encounter tracks of our former selves, we run into our old habits of our younger selves. We continue to be different people, and when we encounter these past shadows, we’re doing so at a higher level than before.

The spiral has come to mean much to me. On the one hand there is the linear journey, then the circular, but then the spiral which essentially integrates the straight line and the circle. I think the spiral more than anything else expresses beautifully TS Eliot’s words: “We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.” Wonderful post, thank you.
Thank you, Don, for that illustration of the spiral, connecting these two elemental shapes. I would add in a third dimension, that of our upward progress. As we climb that spiral staircase, let’s celebrate each step we’ve risen above the base ways of our past.
