Steps Of Happiness or Steps Towards Happiness?

In an earlier post on this blog, I shared a list of steps I regularly take which add to my happiness.

I originally entitled it Steps Towards Happiness.

My reasoning was that no single steps would automatically bring happiness to me or anybody. Also, it seemed to me that by heading more and more often in the direction of happiness, we’re more likely to be happier more than before. So, “towards” seemed clearer and modest.

A few days after releasing that blog post, I listened to a talk by Zen Buddhist Thich Nhat Hanh. He pointed out that happiness is not the destination, it is the way. It’s not where we’re headed, it’s how we are. Happiness is elusive to many of us, because it’s not something we can buy and take out when we want it. It’s not something we can pile up and dole out whenever we’d like it.

It’s not something we can go towards. The conditions for happiness are in each of our steps. The conditions for happiness are in each of our moments.

So, I’m choosing to call my little list Steps Of Happiness, and bring my attention back to the present moment.

Please enjoy them!

“Letting go gives us freedom, and freedom is the only condition for happiness. If, in our heart, we still cling to anything – anger, anxiety, or possessions – we cannot be free.”

  1. I love how you’ve sincerely reflected on this idea. As we shed each layer of doubt, we reveal the pure and radiant being within. I feel your shine!

  2. Thanks for that, Hariod. I’m grateful for your insights, encouragement, and aplomb.
I have no doubts about your memory and hope you won’t, either. In fact, I’ve observed you have a stellar memory.

  3. I agree with you, and you’re reminding me that helping others and being of service is one of my greatest sources of happiness.
I’m also reminded that I can be of greater service when I’ve been taking care of myself. There’s a balance to seek in there between caring for others and ourselves. I’d love to hear more about your thoughts.
