“I automatically assume people won’t like me, so I don’t talk to them unless they approach me first. I can’t become a part of a crowd because I can’t get past that feeling that I don’t belong.”
― Stephanie Kuehnert, Ballads of Suburbia
How is it possible for any of us to be separate? Even the air we breathe goes through other people, beings, and trees. The very water we’re made of has flowed through countless others, and will do so again after it’s flowed through us.
It’s actually quite egotistical to think so much about ourselves that we believe we are separate or alone.
Something to try: The next time you meet someone, find a way to spot what you have in common, and spend less time finding differences. As you continue to notice the similarities we all share, then you’ll notice more and more how much you belong.
