“Letting go is only possible if we can bring awareness and acceptance to the nitty-gritty of just how stuck we can get.”
Put up a sign saying “wet paint” and watch what people do. Many simply have to test it. Is it some deep human need? Are we looking for trouble?
Make a muddy, muddy puddle, and what must we do? See how deep we can get into it this time?
No Mud, No Lotus – Thich Nhat Hanh
From the vantage point of the Zen Buddhist monk, the places we get stuck are actually things for us to celebrate. What’s that!? Yes, as we look deeply into whatever seems to get us stuck, we discover something that we’re holding onto which is holding us back.
Think about someone leaving a kayak carrying their paddle. See how well they can get through a doorway. (Not too well). The paddle served its purpose in the boat, so leave it behind.
It’s the same with life lessons. When we see what’s getting us stuck, we can have the chance to leave it behind so we can move forward through the next doorway.
