Who the heck are you?

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

Go ahead, try changing. I dare you! All you need to do is tell a well-meaning friend that you’ve changed, and they’ll likely do their darndest to undermine you. No, not that your friends are out to get you. No, it’s not that they don’t want to support you. It’s just that they are constantly supporting and reinforcing the you they think is you, and that keeps you in the same ruts.

Does that mean you need to drop your friends? Not necessarily. Just don’t expect them to consciously or even unconsciously support a radical change. You, on the other hand, need to make your own changes in order to fully be who you are, and who you are becoming.
